Advocacy
The Tanzania Forest Conservation Group’s advocacy programme aims to promote a more effective policy environment for forest conservation as well as responding to specific issues where areas with critical biodiversity are under threat.
TFCG has participated in the formulation of the 1998 Tanzania National Forest Policy. Some of the key changes in this policy include the empowerment of local communities to participate in the management of forest reserves.
Through the support of the African Rainforest Conservancy the Tanzania Forest Conservation Group has also been able to respond rapidly to specific conservation issues.
Magombera ForestDuring 2002 Magombera Forest at the base of the Udzungwa Mountains came under threat from a plan to relocate villagers from land sold to a sugar company into the forest. This would have resulted in the clearance of the forest. The forest is one of five swamp forests in Tanzania and has four strictly endemic plant species. The forest has a significant population of the Iringa Red Colobus monkey listed as vulnerable by IUCN. TFCG responded to these plans by visiting the site, discussing the issue with key stakeholders including the sugar company and then bringing together a coalition of NGOs to lobby for the plan to be cancelled. So far the villagers have not been moved into the forest. |
