Environmental Education

TFCG’s environmental education programme aims to raise awareness amongst various stakeholders regarding the importance of forest conservation.  Target groups include the forest-close communities, the District Natural Resources Offices and the General public.

The TFCG environmental education programme uses various media including television, radio, newspaper articles and our biannual newsletters.

In the Forest Close Communities

TFCG work with 65 primary schools in the Eastern Arc and Coastal Forests.  Training is provided to the students in tree nursery management and classroom teaching is given on various environmental issues.  TFCG also provide teachers with environmental education materials.

TFCG have also worked closely with adult men and women in the forest close communities to raise awareness on environmental issues.  This has included video shows, environment day activities, forest walks, study tours and presentations at village assembly meetings.

Newsletters

TFCG publish two biannual newsletters called The Arc Journal and Jarida la Safu ya Milima which highlight issues of relevance to forest conservation in the Eastern Arc and Coastal forest biodiversity hotspot. One newsletter is produced in swahili and is targeted towards communities.  The other is produced in English and is distributed to all district governments in Tanzania as well as to projects, donors and researchers.

GEF Eastern Arc Strategy

Over the next three years TFCG will be implementing the information, education and communication component of the Eastern Arc Strategy funded by UNDP/GEF.   This provides TFCG with resources to raise awareness amongst key stakeholders regarding the Eastern Arc Strategy and more generally to develop an environmental awareness strategy for the area.

Reaching a Broader Audience

In our efforts to provide information on forest conservation to a broader audience TFCG have worked closely with the media including national television, radio and newspapers.
