Improving livelihoods

TFCG has worked to promote certain activities that improve the livelihoods of people living adjacent to the forests.  TFCG has promoted some activities such as fuel efficient stoves and tree planting which aim to make people’s livelihoods more sustainable and to reduce pressure on the natural forest.  In addition TFCG has supported some activities that will provide an increased cash income to households.  This includes fish ponds, bee keeping and tree crops.  Again the aim is to reduce pressure on the forest resource.

Over the last year TFCG have also been working to establish a butterfly farming project--The Amani Butterfly Project--in the East Usambaras whereby communities farm butterflies for export to European and American butterfly houses.  In Kenya a similar project has succeeded in doubling the household incomes for those participating in the scheme.
